What happened to Korra?

So, if you've looked at my blog further back than this post you may have noticed that I was making a Korra (from Legend of Korra) cosplay for Nekocon 2015.  You may also have noticed that there's no follow up post or post about my finishing it.

Well, I did finish it, but due to an issue with the hair pieces I didn't actually wear it.  If you're wondering if I'm upset the answer is no, lol. Although Korra was on my "Future Cosplay" list, she wasn't a high priority for me. I populate that list with either characters that I like, or who have a cool outfit, but I don't necessarily plan to get to all of them.

I made her because some friends of mine asked to do a group cosplay, and since they don't usually cosplay I let them pick the show; I wanted them to choose something that they felt they'd be able to make. I knew I was running the risk of being the only one to complete the cosplay and I was, lol.

That didn't upset me either because they're my friends and I love them, but since I was really only making Korra for them, my heart wasn't really into it.

Will I ever wear my Korra cosplay?  Maybe one day in the future I'll feel like fixing the wig, but for now she'll just live in my closet ready should the time arise.

Lesson: Don't let mishaps and malfunctions distress you. Cosplay is ultimately for fun; it should relieve stress, not cause it.

Happy Cosplaying!!!

Work Log: Korra (Legend of Korra) #2

Yesterday I mostly completed the top of Korra.  I just need to add the trim to the
collar and arms and finish the hem. I was going to just hem it, but now I think I might also put bias tape on the bottom. It's probably inaccurate, but you can't see the bottom anyway, lol.

Today I make the blue "apron. It's a little difficult to tell from the photo, but it's navy blue. It was really easy to use the suggested method I found here on DeviantArt.

I also ordered my wig today from EpicCosplay.com as usual. It's the pre-styled ponytail wig in Dark Brown. I love the customer service there, so much. Yesterday the site said that they were out of stock, so I contacted them to try to find out when they'd be back in stock. They emailed me back that they'd checked and actually had a few left.  Yet another reason that I'll keep buying their products.

I probably won't have time to work on this again until Saturday, but hopefully I'll finish the top, hem the pants, and get the two lower arm bracers, and the fur "skirt" done.

Work Log: Korra (Legend of Korra) #1

I finally started working on my Korra cosplay for Nekocon in November. Last night I made the pants using a free and easy drawstring pant pattern by Martha Stewart, that I found on Pinterest. Yes, I could have just used some of my own pajama pants to make a pattern, but I'm always so nervous that that's not going to work out.

Please excuse the cat butt, lol

The fabric is a poly/cotton twill that I bought from Hancock during their half off sale.  I know the color isn't quite right, but I couldn't find any gray blue fabric that wasn't denim, and I'm still wary about buying fabric online.

Overall I think they turned out pretty good.  I just have to get some twill tape to use for my drawstring. I'm hoping to have time to make the top on Friday.

Nekocon Line-Up 2015

So I'm still not one of those hardcore cosplayers that wears two (or more) different cosplays in one day and I still can't bring myself to wear one on the Sunday of a con.  Especially not a convention like Nekocon that's in November.  I'm usually so cold while cosplaying that it's a treat to wear warm comfy clothes on that Sunday, lol.

Anyway, to get to the point, I am again only wearing two new cosplays for this convention.  My DH and a couple of our friends want to do a group cosplay and they chose The Last Airbender/ The Legend of Korra as our theme.  I'm, of course, going to be Korra, one friend will be Zuko, the other friend has decided he'll be Tenzin and my DH has decided to be a genderbent Toph. Actually, in the Ember Island Players episode of The Last Airbender, the team goes to see a play by the Ember Island Players about them, and Toph is portrayed as a man, lol.  So that's who my DH is going to cosplay.  (References pics from left to right: Korra, Zuko, Tenzin, Toph (as portrayed by a man).

So that'll be one of the days.  For the other day, I'm going to try to be Shinoa Hiragi from Owari no Seraph (Seraph of the End). I just loved these uniforms and I think she's a great character. Plus now I have a reason to have another giant weapon. I say try because it's usually difficult to find time to work on cosplay once school starts, but I definitely will work my hardest.

I'm so excited for these cosplays! I better get started, lol.

Nekocon 2014 Review / RoFCon 2015 Prep

So my DH has been hounding me about the fact that I didn't do a wrap-up after Nekocon in November, so I'm adding it as part of my pre-RoFCon post.

For Nekocon this year I did two new cosplays and I'm actually ashamed to say that I really sew anything for either of these cosplays, which is not my style, but it was good because I didn't have any cosplay inspiration until the last minute.

On Friday, I was Chiho Sasaki from Devil is a Part-Timer and my DH was Maou.

We ordered the shirt and visors from online, and I sewed on bias tape to make the stripes. The patches and the shirts and visors are iron transfers. I ordered the bow tie from Amazon, the skirt is from Old Navy and I already had the shoes. The wig is three pieces from EpicCosplay.com. It's the Chronos 14", and two 20" wavy/curly ponytail clipons, all in Cotton Candy Pink. I didn't have to do anything to the Chronos wig, I just cut the curly ponytails down to the length that I needed.

On Saturday, I was Touka Kirishima from Tokyo Ghoul.

I really love this character and wearing this costume was comfortable, but need to take in the jacket a little bit. I ordered the jacket and boots, the rest were in my closet. The wig is another Chronos 14" from EpicCosplay.com; the color is Fusion Purple/Black.

For Ring of Fire Con coming up next week, I'll be cosplaying Chiho again and my DH and I are going to be the 10th Doctor Who and Martha Jones.  She'll be another closet cosplay, for me since the only thing I had to buy was a jacket.

I'm also working on a onesie that I saw on YouTube. I'll make a post about that after I finish it that includes a link to where I found it. I'm excited about it, because I think it'll be SO CUTE!

Well that's it for this post have a great day everyone and . . .

Post Nekocon 2013 Wrap-Up

For anyone that actually reads this blog, sorry this is SOOOO late.  Life kinda happened and I finally decided to just sit down and finish this, ha ha.

I only wore one new cosplay for this con.  I KNOW RIGHT!!  That's the first time in the year and a half that I've been cosplaying.  I was waiting for the wig I wanted Kyouko Kirigiri from Danganronpa to come back in stock, but it just came back in stock last week.  *sigh* so I'll be making her for the next convention.

So, for Neko 2013 I wore Stocking Anarchy again and debuted Hajime Ichinose from Gatchaman Crowds.  This was one of the easiest to make.  The skirt is a basic circle skirt, but I made the waistband 4 inches tall to match her high waistband. The straps are the same fabric as the skirt, about 1.5" wide and of course, crossed in the back. I found the blouse on Ebay.  It already came with the black collar, but originally had black buttons, so I switched them out for white ones. I bought the boots from Payless, the wig is the same wig I wear for Gogo Yubari and I made the yellow necktie flat, then tied it and it is attached to the shirt with snaps.  (I couldn't figure out how to sew one that I could tie around my neck and realized that it didn't actually need to be tied on)

My BF (well, fiance now), made my NOTE for me.  It started as a moleskin journal, that he covered with a piece of white cardstock.  He drew on the symbol and other decorations, then colored the silver portions with a Sharpie and covered the paper portions with clear contact paper.  The journal is still totally functional :-)

Not that I took a good picture of it, but I just made the bird barrette out of some leftover clay, painted a couple of coats of acrylic white paint on and glued it to a barrette.  Super easy!!

Although not many people recognized me, the ones that did were as excited about the show as I was, and were super happy that I had a NOTE.  I will definitely wear this cosplay again.

HAPPY COSPLAYING!!

Nekocon 2012 Wrap-Up

So, I think both cosplays went well.  Gogo Yubari was a pretty big hit for those who recognized her.  My BF decided at the last minute to cosplay a Crazy 88 so that made it even more fun.  Since it was just before Halloween, easily found his mask and tie at an Halloween superstore, he got the jacket from the Goodwill and the sword from an import store.

People mostly loved Gogo's meteor hammer.  I got quite a few looks when people realized that I used real chain.  Don't worry the ball itself was foam.

Maka was a hit too and I got a lot of compliments on my boots.

The pic is a before and after.

Since I'm still relatively new to sewing, I didn't try to make her coat.  I'll mostly likely attempt that in the future and then make a scythe as well.

If you're interested in how I did the boots, there really isn't much to say.  I cut the straps off of the original boots.  My white straps started out as white men's leather belts that I found on Amazon.com.  I bought four of the longest available because I knew I needed four buckles and I wanted as much leather as possible.

With my BF's help, we basically would measure the strap, mark with a pencil where we needed to cut, and cut.  Leather belt cuts really easily with regular scissors and I glued the belt on with Fabri-Tac.

To create the hole she has along the side and back of her boots, I used a leather punch (the red-handled item pictured above) and large grommets that I bought from Joanns.

In the end we had plenty of belt without having to use the portion that has the pre-punched holes.

If you're interested in how I did the meteor hammer, that's a separate post.

Happy cosplaying!

Next up: Maka Albarn and Gogo Yubari

Our next Con is Nekcon in Hampton, VA on Nov 2-4.  That gives me about 70 days to get my next two cosplays together.

Gogo Yubari (Kill Bill Vol. 1)

and

Maka Albarn (Soul Eater)

I've already started acquiring and scouting items.  It looks like I may have to buy more Gogo stuff than I would like but I haven't given up yet.  I really want to get the fabric for her skirt as accurate as possible, so I'm still looking for a plaid I can use to make my own before, I just buy a pre-made skirt.

I was also surprised to notice in her fight with the bride (Uma Thurman) that her sneakers are most likely Nike Air Force Ones.  That's hilarious to me, so I will definitely be scouting around Ebay for a pre-worn pair of those in my size.

As for Maka, I'm already working on her sweater vest.  I'm knitting it myself using the Academia pattern from Twist Collective.  I'm using the Cascade 220 Superwash Sport on the Lemon (#820) colorway.  The original pattern as a fair-isle section, but I'm obviously just going to knit the vest plain.

My local fabric store has a cute red/black plaid twill that I'll be buying to make her skirt.  I would like to make the tie if I can find some striped fabric even if it's cotton.  And if I'm feeling brave and still have a few weeks time, I'll attempt her coat and make a scythe.  Otherwise I'll just re-cover some used books and make my own creative and Soul Eater related titles and carry those.

Overall, I'm just hoping that I don't get so involved in work that I run out of time to finish these cosplays.  The beginning of the school year is such a crunch time, that I usually come how and crash.  Wish me luck and . . .

Happy Cosplaying!!
